Our Events
This year's vision is dual-focused: maximising employability while ensuring
members have fun.
Mixers / Socials
Our law socials and mixers provide a relaxed and informal setting for members to connect with peers, alumni, and legal professionals.
These events offer a unique opportunity to gain insights into the legal field, discuss career paths, and exchange experiences. Beyond networking, they foster a sense of community within Durham Law Society, allowing relationships to flourish and networks to be built early in your legal journey.
Law Firm Dinners
Law firm dinners offer an exclusive and intimate setting for members to engage with representatives from top law firms over a meal. These events allow for candid and in-depth discussions about a firm’s culture, values, and work environment, offering insights that go beyond what is available online.
Highly competitive and regarded as one of DLS’s most popular events, firm dinners provide an exceptional opportunity for meaningful connections.
Events for Aspiring Barristers
At Durham Law Society, we want to encourage and excite a new generation to enter and diversify the bar. We have a history of esteemed guests, including Nick Vineall KC (Chair of the Young Bar) and Jolyon Maugham KC (The Good Law Project).
Our speakers enrich students with passion and knowledge to successfully enter the Bar. We aim to support students throughout their journey to the Bar. From mini-pupillage workshops, visits from Chambers, and BPC (Bar Practice Course) events, we guide students towards their destined career as a Barrister. Whether you’re coming from a Law or non-law background, we are excited to open up the possibility of a career at the Bar to you.
Law Firm Career Presentations
Law Firm Representatives deliver concise overviews of practice areas, discuss notable deals, highlight secondment options, and share key initiatives that define the firm’s approach.
This format allows members to compare different firms, ask insightful questions, and gather valuable personal insights, helping to guide their career decisions and shape their professional trajectory in the legal field.

Exclusive Firm Open Days
Experience an exclusive Open Day hosted by some of our prestigious firm sponsors, tailored specifically for Durham Law Society members. This rare opportunity allows students to gain personal and in-depth insights into a firm’s culture, work environment, and career paths.
Attendees can assess whether a firm is the right fit for them, while also solidifying their interest in pursuing a career in commercial law.
Law for Non-Law Events
Contrary to the misconception that law is only for law students, this event is designed to encourage students from all disciplines to explore legal career opportunities. Durham Law Society will help dispel any concerns about entering the legal field with a non-law background.
Through engaging discussions and expert guidance, attendees will learn about the wide range of roles in law firms and how transferable skills from other fields can lead to a successful legal career.
Mergers & Acquisitions Competitions
Mock M&A Transaction Competitions offer members hands-on experience in assessing the suitability of an acquisition, analyzing the strategic fit, and evaluating potential risks. Participants then engage in negotiating key terms of the acquisition agreement, simulating real-life deal-making dynamics.
Human Rights Events
The Human Rights Division at Durham Law Society is dedicated to enriching our members' understanding of human rights within the legal profession. Our events feature influential barristers, solicitors, and advocates, offering students direct insights into the challenges and impact of human rights law.
Through these sessions, students can connect with professionals, gain practical skills, and explore diverse career pathways in human rights, from pro bono work in commercial law to advocacy and legal reform.
Careers Events
Careers Events are aimed to leave members well-informed about the application processes in their preferred legal routes, while Mixers/Socials foster genuine human connections that enhance the overall experience.
We host events almost every day through the academic year and can add value to any of your interests within the field!
